It is always terrible when you find that your water pipes leak. You have to spend a lot of money and time for a plumbing specialist, who would be surely late and forget to bring every kind of spanner, so you need to wait for another two days. And if you live in an apartment and have neighbours under you it can make a lot of problems for them as well and you would have to pay them for repairs and other damages. It is really terrible. But this article is created to offer you some tips about fixing water pipes yourself. A man should be aware of any emergencies in his house. And even if you can’t repair a water pipe, you should know how to delay leaks at least, before a plumbing specialist comes.
Certainly, we are speaking about small leak, because if you have the Niagara Falls in your bathroom, you need to change your pipes as soon as possible and can’t waste time trying to tackle it yourself. It is very important knowledge for people who live in an apartment or a several storey house. These are the people who suffer in such a situation most of all. And you may think it’s a daunting task, to teach yourself a trade and do it yourself, especially plumbing, but really, it’s quite simple.
It is great if you are able to stop the water flow to the apartment or room underneath the leak, you should have valves in your apartment for that. This is the simplest thingt for you to do tostop water leaks, and then you should probably go to a plumbing specialist. You may offer him a cup of coffee, of course, but it is rather difficult to do, especially when you don’t have water in your home. So, a specialist does everything he should and you pay him. Great! You don’t need to think of it anymore.
But how you can fix it yourself, without paying money to someone and spending hour in waiting for the help of a specialist? It is easy, but depends on the type of problem. Let’s consider that your pipe has only one small hole in its body. If that’s your only problem, it can be resolved very simply. You can make a temporary bandage and put it on the pipe. It will stop a water flow for sure, make sure the hole is sealed with some kind of rubber, the kind you get in an adhesive tube at a hardware store is the best. However, you may get the rubber from anywhere. For example, you may use a piece of a thick rubber glove, a piece of an old boot or anything like that. You can use your imagination to realize where you can get the thing you need at that moment. Then you need to cut out a piece of rubber, so that it covers not only the hole, but also a great area around it. After that you should fix it with the help of some sort of clamp or tension buckle. You can buy a clamp in a hardware store or make it yourself. To press your bandage to a pipe, you may use a piece of wire making a few turns around the pipe and then twist it around. This will help you to avoid other small leaks.
You can use this piece of advice in an emergency situation, when you don’t have time to change your pipes. But the best thing to do is surely to use the services of a professional. Don’t forget to have a routine inspection of your pipes to avoid the situation when a leak may take you unaware. And if you find that your pipes are rather old, just call a professional and they will change your pipes without any unexpected hardships.
